B2C

Know Your
B2C Buyer

A practical three-step process for building a genuine B2C Ideal Customer Profile, using your own team's knowledge and AI to do the work.

In B2C, you are not marketing to a demographic. You are marketing to a person with a feeling they want more of, a problem they want gone, and a specific moment in their life when they become ready to buy.

What you need

One or two people in your team who are closest to how your customers think and feel -- your brand or marketing manager, whoever runs your social media, your founder if they still do markets or trade shows, or your customer service lead. Thirty minutes per person. A way to record the conversation.

Step 1

Interview Your Team

Sit down with your team member and work through these questions. Record the conversation -- do not take notes, just let them talk. You do not need to get through every question. If they go deep on one, stay there. Whenever you get a short or general answer, ask: "Can you tell me about a specific time that happened?"

PART A: YOUR BUYER'S WORLD

Their Need

These questions surface the real problem or feeling your product solves for the person buying it.

1.Think about the type of customer you wish you could clone. The one who comes back, tells their friends, leaves a great review. What were they trying to solve, fix, or feel when they first found you?

Not the surface-level answer. What was actually going on in their life? What was uncomfortable, missing, or not working?

Follow-up: "Where do you see that come through? Is it in reviews, social comments, conversations at markets, customer service messages?"

2.When customers talk about the problem your product solves, what language do they actually use? What words come up again and again?

Think about reviews, social media, emails, or conversations you have had. How do they describe it before they know your product exists?

Follow-up: "Can you think of a specific review or message where someone nailed it in their own words?"

Their Deeper Motivation

B2C purchases are rarely just practical. These questions surface the emotional need underneath: the identity, feeling, or aspiration that really drives the decision.

3.When you look at your happiest customers, what do they seem to be getting from your product beyond the obvious? What feeling or identity does it connect to for them?

Think about identity, belonging, confidence, peace of mind, escape, aspiration, self-expression.

Follow-up: "When customers post about you or leave a review, how do they describe how it made them feel -- not what it did, but how it made them feel?"

4.If one of your best customers was telling a friend about your product, what would they say it gave them beyond what the product actually does?

Their Trigger

B2C buyers often sit on a decision until something tips them into action. These questions surface the specific moment or event that made them finally buy.

5.What tends to be happening in someone's life when they decide to buy from you? Is there a specific moment, occasion, season, or feeling that pushes them from thinking about it to actually doing it?

Follow-up: "Is there a pattern you have noticed? A time of year, a life event, a mood? When do people seem most ready?"

6.What nearly stops people from buying? What gets them over the line?

Follow-up: "Is it price, trust, not understanding the product, something else? And when they do buy, what was the thing that tipped them?"

Our Secret Sauce

These questions surface what only your brand can genuinely claim -- not what you think makes you special, but what customers actually say and do when they choose you.

7.When customers come back or recommend you to someone, what do they actually say? Is there a phrase or sentiment you hear repeatedly?

Think about reviews, testimonials, social media tags, word of mouth. What words keep showing up?

Follow-up: "If you had to pick the one thing customers say about you that no competitor could honestly claim, what would it be?"

8.What do customers arrive at themselves about why you are different? Not what your marketing tells them, but the conclusion they reach on their own after experiencing your product?

PART B: YOUR LIVED EXPERIENCE

Your Lived Experience

These questions surface what only your business knows. The answers here become your most powerful content -- the insight no competitor can claim because they were not there.

9.Walk me through a specific customer moment where your product or service made a real difference to how someone felt. What actually happened?

This could be a story from a market, a message from a customer, a review that stopped you in your tracks, or something you witnessed firsthand.

10.What is the most common misunderstanding people have about what you do -- the thing that surprises them once they actually experience it?

Follow-up: "Can you give me a specific example of a customer who came in with one expectation and left with something completely different?"

11.What does the industry broadly get wrong about how to serve this type of customer?

Step 2

Get the Transcript

Once the interview is done, upload the recording into a transcription tool -- Otter.ai, Descript, or simply upload directly to ChatGPT and ask it to transcribe. You now have the raw material.

Step 3

Run the LLM Prompt

Copy the prompt below. Open ChatGPT, Claude, or any LLM. Paste the prompt, then paste your transcript directly underneath it where indicated.

B2C ICP Prompt
I'm going to give you a transcript of an interview I ran with a team member about our best B2C customers.

Your job is to turn that transcript into a completed B2C Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) using the structure below.

Be specific. Use the actual language from the transcript wherever you can. Do not write in generalities. I want this to read like someone who genuinely knows this customer, not a generic marketing document.

Write the THEIR NEED, THEIR DEEPER MOTIVATION, THEIR TRIGGER, and OUR SECRET SAUCE sections as first-person voice-of-customer, as if the customer is speaking. Write the ANSWERING sections as direct, practical marketing guidance.

WHO THIS BUYER IS (in plain English)
Write 2 to 3 sentences describing the specific person who buys from us. Their life, their world, what they are navigating day to day. Make it feel human and real. Not a demographic, a person.

THEIR NEED
The specific problem or feeling in their life that our product helps them solve or achieve. Write this in their voice, as if they are saying it.
- What is the real problem or feeling, underneath the surface one?
- What does it cost them in time, stress, money, or confidence if it stays unsolved?
- What are they actively looking to fix or feel right now?

THEIR DEEPER MOTIVATION
Beyond the practical function, the deeper emotional need driving them. Write this in their voice. Examples: Escape, Identity, Connection, Peace of Mind, Belonging, Confidence, Recognition.
- What deeper feeling or identity are they seeking?
- What would make them feel they made the right decision?
- What do they want this purchase to say about them, or do for them as a person?

THEIR TRIGGER
The specific moment or event that makes them think "I need a solution for this now." Write this in their voice.
- What was happening in their life when they decided to act?
- Was there a specific occasion, season, life event, or feeling that tipped them?
- What nearly stopped them, and what got them over the line?

OUR SECRET SAUCE
Why they choose us over anyone else, and what they say when they recommend us. Write this in their voice.
- What words do they actually use when they describe us to a friend?
- What do they say is the thing only we can give them?
- What makes coming back feel natural, and leaving feel like a loss?

VOICE OF CUSTOMER: REAL PHRASES
Pull out 3 to 5 phrases or sentiments from the transcript that capture how this type of customer talks about us or our product. Only use what is in the transcript. Do not fabricate.

THE ONE THING
In one sentence: what is the single most important thing we offer this customer that no one else does?
